Fiorentina forward Dusan Vlahovic and Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Braut Haaland are both looking likely to relocate their future at the end of this season and Manchester United are linked with a move for both players to replace Edinson Cavani who could leave the Old Trafford stadium in January.
The Serbia international is showcasing his talent in Serie A, scoring 37 goals and notching up five assists in 55 league appearances since the start of the last season. The youngster is also leading the race for the golden boot award in Serie A this season, having scored three more goals than the second-placed Ciro Immobile.
Meanwhile, the 21-year-old’s contract will expire in June 2023 and the striker has turned down a contract extension with La Viola and is looking for a new challenge in his career next season.
On the other hand, Haaland has scored 53 goals in 54 appearances in Bundesliga over the past few campaigns and the Norwegian has a release clause in his contract which can be activated from 2022. So, the 21-year-old will also be in the market from next year.
5 reasons why Manchester United should go for Vlahovic over Haaland:
5. The struggle to settle down in Premier League after leaving Bundesliga:
In recent years many players have made a big-money move from Bundesliga to Premier League after displaying terrific performances in Germany, but have failed to replicate the same in the English top-flight. The most notable names are Timo Werner, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and somewhat Jadon Sancho.
The Englishman hasn’t been able to replicate the same performance that he used to showcase at Signal Iduna Park week in Week out, however, he might need time to settle down as he is still very young and has plenty of time to develop. So, it will also be tough for Haaland to perform in England as there will be high expectations on him after a big-money move.
Therefore, Vlahovic could be a better option given he is consistently performing in a much tougher league and the Italian league is considered one of the best tactically.
4. Injury concerns:
Haaland has already missed crucial stages of this season due to injury and the consequences of that, BVB have been relegated to the Europa League. Without the Norwegian, the German side struggled to perform in the Champions League. The 21-year-old also missed a few weeks last season due to injuries.
So, this should be considered before signing the youngster. The Norwegian is consistently suffering injuries, despite playing in Germany where the players have to play much fewer games than the other top five leagues and playing in England means the young forward might pick up more injuries due to the congested fixture list throughout the season.
Therefore, Dusan Vlahovic should be a better option who has played 37 games in the league last season and has started every league game for Fiorentina so far this season. So, the Serbian will be a safer choice.
3. Complete forward:
Haaland is strong, quick, excellent in the air and also great in finishing. However, given the German league is much more open, the Norwegian’s quality against deep-lying defences hasn’t been tested yet. So, this will be a big risk, given Manchester United will have to play against low blocks for the majority of the games.
On the other hand, apart from being strong, quick, great in the air and also excellent in front of the goal, Vlahovic has played against well-structured defences in Serie A. The Italian league is known for their defence. And having performed against well-organized backlines, the youngster should consume less time to settle down in the Premier League.
2. The financial advantages:
Haaland reportedly has a €75(£64) million release which will be significantly higher than what Vlahovic might cost, given the Serbian will have only one year remaining in his current contract next summer.
Apart from the huge fee, the Norwegian’s transfer will be extremely expensive including the player’s salary and agent fees. The salary package of Vlahovic will be way cheaper and given the two forwards have similar attributes, the Serbian will be a shrewd purchase for Manchester United. With the Fiorentina forward having the experience of playing in a much tougher league, signing Vlahovic could be a better choice for Manchester United than Haaland.
1, the agent issue:
Before signing Haaland, Manchester United should keep in mind that Mino Riola is the agent of the Norwegian. The super-agent always tries to take his clients to different clubs every two or three years and this will always make the player’s future uncertain and will link with a move away from the club every year. So, after spending a huge fee on the Norwegian superstar, Manchester United might not want to sell the forward in just a couple of years.
Meanwhile, Vlahovic will bring less drama into the club and would only want to improve at Manchester United. So, given there isn’t much difference in attributes between the two youngsters. Manchester United should go for the highly-rated Serbian rather than the Norwegian star for the aforementioned reasons.
