Alan Shearer has condemned Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay after a disappointing performance against Burnley.
Manchester United displayed an inconsistent performance against the Clarets as they failed to come away with all three points despite showcasing a dominating first 45 minutes. Paul Pogba gave the lead to the Old Trafford outfit before Jay Rodriguez’s equalizer early in the second half. Ralf Rangnick’s side were unlucky as two goals were disallowed for an offside and foul respectively.
Speaking with Premier League production(via Metro), Shearer slammed Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay for a poor display against a struggling Sean Dyche’s side. He said:
“From Manchester United’s point of view, I mean Maguire and McTominay? The lack of effort and the lack of a tackle from Maguire and McTominay was embarrassing in that midfield. It was far too easy and that’s how Burnley scored.”
Peter Schmeichel stressed his concerns about the Red Devils’ defence this season and said:
“You can read whatever you want into statistics but when you concede 31 goals that Man United have, you’re not a top-four team then. Newcastle who just got out of the bottom have conceded the most goals with 44. It’s not that far off. They’ve conceded 13 more and they are at the bottom.
“You cannot conceded that many goals, it’s simple as that. You have to keep it tight at the back and then if it’s a 1-0 you have to have the ability to bring that 1-0 victory home if you want to consider yourself top four.”
Harry Maguire has been enduring a difficult season this term following the disappointment in the Euro 2020 final in the summer. The Englishman was one of the key members of the squad over the last two seasons, however, he has failed to replicate the same performance so far this season.
On the other hand, Scott McTominay has displayed much-improved performance since the arrival of Ralf Rangnick. However, the midfielder has been deployed in an unfamiliar position due to the lack of options.
Rangnick was reportedly willing to sign a defensive midfielder in the recently concluded January transfer window, but the club undermined his wishes and therefore, the German is having to deploy the Scotsman in an unfamiliar position.
Manchester United are struggling to showcase their best this season and the change of manager hasn’t improved the performance either. So, although the players and managers are being blamed for the recent downfall, the main reason behind these issues are the club’s hierarchy and their incompetency.
