Barcelona are reportedly lining up a move for Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani as per the report in Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo

The 34-year-old joined the Old Trafford outfit last summer for free and enjoyed a productive debut season, scoring 17 goals in 39 appearances in all competitions. Following an impressive debut season, the Red Devils decided to extend the Uruguayan’s contract for one more season but the forward has struggled to stay fit and play regular first-team football, making only eight appearances in all competitions this season and scoring a solitary goal.

According to the report, Barcelona have shortlisted Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani and Manchester City forward Ferran Torres to reinforce their attacking options during this January transfer window. But, everything is dependent on if the Blaugrana can offload any of their current players to free up the spaces for the new signings.

The report further claims that the 34-year-old is also keen on joining the Catalan giants, despite the Camp Nou outfit’s absence from the elite European competition. And following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Uruguayan forward might find it difficult to break into new manager Ralf Rangnick’s first eleven.

Will Manchester United sell Edinson Cavani to Barcelona in January?

After buying Edinson Cavani for free, cashing in on the Uruguay international in January will be a shrewd business from Manchester United. It is looking highly unlikely that the forward will continue beyond this season and therefore, selling the experienced campaigner in order to generate some money will be the right decision from the Red Devils hierarchy.

The 34-year-old has struggled with his injury problems so far this campaign and given his age, the fitness issue might grow as the season progresses. With Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood already in the squad, the Old Trafford outfit can afford to offload Cavani in the upcoming winter transfer window.

However, it will be interesting to see what the new manager Ralf Rangnick decides about the 34-year-old’s future. The German boss likes to work with younger players and therefore, he might sanction the departure if the player wants to leave in January.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s squad have reportedly suffered from the recent Covid-19 surge in England as recent reports are claiming that few players and coaching staff have tested positive on Sunday. Therefore, the game on Tuesday night against Brentford is in jeopardy. But, as things stand the game will take place at the same time.
