Former Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov believes the Red Devils star Cristiano Ronaldo deserves more respect after the 37-year-old’s performance in this campaign.

The Portuguese superstar made a grand return to his former club last summer that he left back in 2009 to join Real Madrid. The forward has been one of the few standout performers this season along with David De Gea for the record Premier League champions, scoring 24 goals and registering three assists in 37 appearances in all competitions.

Speaking with the club’s media, Berbatov recalled his time with Ronaldo at Manchester United and said that he is not surprised by the Portuguese’s display this season. The former United striker also claimed that the 37-year-old could still play for three or four years, given the forward’s lifestyle and his way of taking care of himself.

In the end, Berbatov said that Ronaldo deserves more respect after scoring 18 goals in the toughest league in the world at the age of 37. He said:

“To be honest, I’m not surprised. I just had the pleasure of playing one year with him, which was a short period, but I saw how he prepared himself when he was at United. And then I followed him up into his career and it’s not surprising to see him play like this.

“I am sure if he continues taking care of himself like he is doing now, he can play for another three or four years for sure. Yes, time is waiting for no-one and, with time, some of your qualities are getting less but then you need to be smart and adjust your way of playing football.

“You can still be good and Ronaldo is a case of this, 18 goals at 37 years of age, in the best league in the world, come on! You need to show the respect there.”

Our View:

Cristiano Ronaldo has enjoyed a productive debut season in his second spell at Manchester United. Although he lost his form midway through the season, the forward has regained his goal-scoring prowess towards the back end of the season.

The 37-year-old almost single-handedly carried the Old Trafford outfit to the Champions League knock-out stage this term. The importance of his presence was apparent as the Red Devils haven’t won a single game this season without the Portuguese superstar in the first eleven.

However, it is not clear yet as to whether Ronaldo would want to stay at Manchester United or not next season. The 37-year-old still has one year remaining in his current contract and the club has an option of triggering the clause to extend the deal for one more year.

The Portuguese would want to play in the Champions League next season. But, the Red Devils are unlikely to be able to offer him that. So, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Ronaldo at the Old Trafford stadium.
