Champions League Manchester United: Following a devastating defeat against Watford in the Premier League, Manchester United will have to shift their focus to the Champions League as they will encounter Villarreal on Tuesday night.

After a lacklustre performance on Saturday afternoon, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been sacked by the club’s hierarchy and Michael Carrick will be the caretaker manager for this encounter before the club can find an interim boss until the end of this season.

Champions League Manchester United: The Red Devils team news

In terms of team news provided by the club’s website, Paul Pogba will be sidelined due to a thigh injury that he suffered during a training session with France. Fellow countryman Raphael Varane will also be out of this encounter due to injury issues.

Having tested positive for Covid-19, Mason Greenwood will be out and Edinson Cavani might also have to sit out due to tendon injury. Meanwhile, after suffering another head injury, Luke Shaw is in doubt and will be assessed ahead of the game.

Manchester United predicted line-up against Villarreal:

Champions League Manchester United: It will be interesting to see how Michael Carrick lines up on Thursday night. But, given he was among Solskjaer’s coaching staff, there might not be a huge surprise in the starting Xi.

Therefore, David De Gea will start between the sticks and in front of the Spaniard, the back four will be Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire and Alex Telles if Shaw fails to pass the fitness test on matchday.

However, given Harry Maguire is suspended for the next week’s game against Chelsea, Eric Bailly should start in this game alongside Lindelof as the Ivorian need game time ahead of a crucial encounter against the league leaders.

Meanwhile, after producing a terrific performance against Watford as a second-half substitute, it will be hard for Carrick to bench Donny Van De Beek and alongside him, Fred might return to the starting eleven. Bruno Fernandes will continue in the number ten position.

Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho should be on either side of the flanks and they will be interchanging their position continuously throughout the game. Cristiano Ronaldo will lead the line for the Red Devils.

Manchester United predicted line-up against Villarreal:

De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Telles; Van de Beek, Fred; Sancho, Fernandes, Rashford; Ronaldo

Villarreal 1-1 Manchester United:

Manchester United must avoid defeat in this game in order to keep their hopes alive to qualify for the knock-out stage and should come away with at least a point against Villarreal.
