The negotiations regarding the contract extension of Bruno Fernandes has stalled as Manchester United failed to match the Portuguese’s demand, as per the report in English outlet The Athletic

The 27-year-old joined the Red Devils back in January 2020 from Primeira Liga side Sporting CP for around £49 million. Since joining the theatre of dreams, the midfielder has scored 33 goals and notched up 22 assists in 70 Premier League appearances over the last couple of campaigns.

According to the report, Bruno Fernandes is keen on becoming one of the highest earners of the club, given he has been one of the best players for Manchester United over the past few seasons. But, the Red Devils’ first contract proposal did not match the player’s demands and the talks between the two parties have stopped at the moment.

The report further claims that the 27-year-old has refused to accept the contract proposal in late autumn and talks will resume in May.

Should Manchester United award a big contract to Bruno Fernandes?

Tying Bruno Fernandes down in a long term contract will be a very good decision by Manchester United. Since joining the club, the midfielder has been the most consistent performer for the Old Trafford outfit and extending the Portuguese’s contract should be high on the priority list for the Red Devils hierarchy.

The 27-year-old earns significantly lower than other players like Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Paul Pogba and Jadon Sancho who have failed to deliver consistent performance. So, demanding the salary package closer to these aforementioned players is justified from the Portuguese.

However, it will be interesting to see if the Red Devils hierarchy will meet the player’s demands or not. The former Sporting CP man is one of the best goal-scoring midfielders in the world and he has also shown his prowess in creating goal-scoring opportunities for his fellow teammates. So, Manchester United should award a new contract to the 27-year-old with a salary hike.

Meanwhile, after a disappointing result against Aston Villa, Ralf Rangnick’s side will return to action on Wednesday night against Brentford. The Red Devils have failed to win back-to-back games in the Premier League and will be looking to get back to winning ways in midweek in order to stay in the hunt for the top four finish.
