Edinson Cavani was reportedly furious with Jadon Sancho after Manchester United asked the Uruguayan to give up the number seven shirt.
The 34-year-old wanted to leave the club this summer and Boca Juniors were reportedly leading the race to sign the Uruguay international. But, the Red Devils managed to persuade the forward to stay at Old Trafford and sign a one-year contract extension.
According to the report in The Athletic, Cavani was asked about handing over the number seven shirt to the summer signing Jadon Sancho who was promised that number before joining the Old Trafford stadium.
The Red Devils’ this demand made the Uruguayan angry and did not want to give up his preferred number to a 13 years younger colleague, especially as he was asked to stay for one more year.
Although the 34-year-old gave up the iconic number seven shirt to Cristiano Ronaldo, the situation was different for Jadon Sancho.
The England International eventually took the number 25 shirt and the report was claiming that this situation confused the youngster and might have contributed to his recent struggles so far this season as he is yet to register a goal or assist for his new club.
Cavani was angry after Manchester United’s demand involving Sancho:
Jadon Sancho has arrived from a different league and the Englishman will need time to settle down in the new surroundings. In order to settle down in a new league, the 21-year-old needs regular game-time but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s change of system has left the Englishman away from the regular first-team action over the past few weeks.
Despite signing the 21-year-old to resolve the right-wing position, Sancho has played on the left-wing for most of the games under the Norwegian boss. The constant chopping and changes of formation have also confused the players which have impacted their performance.
Therefore, although Sancho hasn’t had a great start to the season at Old Trafford stadium, the Norwegian boss hasn’t done any favours to the youngster either to settle down in the new league.
Meanwhile, after a disappointing defeat against Manchester City, Solskjaer’s job is under threat. But, the Red Devils hierarchy are reportedly willing to keep their faith in the Norwegian boss, despite the recent downfall. So, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the Old Trafford outfit and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
