Manchester United have announced that Ajax boss Erik ten Hag will become the club’s new manager from next season and following the Dutchman’s appointment, there is a doubt about the future of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 52-year-old boss has signed a contract until June 2025 with an option to extend for a further one year. On the other hand, the Portuguese superstar still has one year remaining in his current contract with an option to extend for a further year.

However, few reports were suggesting that Cristiano Ronaldo is not in the Dutchman’s plan and the five-time Ballon D’or winner might be asked to leave following the conclusion of this campaign.

Meanwhile, speaking on the Dutch Soccer site back in 2017, ten Hag expressed his admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and said that the striker’s work ethic has made him one of the best players in the world. ten Hag stated:

“Take Cristiano Ronaldo. His heading capabilities, his jump, his timing, that takes 1000s of hours of training and practice. Like with his free-kicks and kicking technique. He’s so talented but he constantly demands the best out of himself. That is the difference with the subtop.”

Our View:

Almost five years have passed since Erik ten Hag’s comment about Cristiano Ronaldo. The striker is currently at the wrong end of his career, however, is still showcasing his appetite for more success.

The 37-year-old has scored 21 goals this season in all competitions despite playing in an underperforming team. And this shows that the veteran still has the ability to perform at the highest level.

However, the new boss will have a big job ahead in assembling a squad who are capable of challenging for big titles. The Dutchman will need time to implement his philosophy, but at the age of 37, Ronaldo does not have time on his side.

So, it will be interesting to see what the five-time Ballon D’or winner decides about his future. With only a few more years remaining in his extraordinary career, the 37-year-old would want to play in the Champions League and fight for big silverware. However, the Red Devils will not be able to offer him that at this time.
