Rio Ferdinand has asked Manchester United to go all out for Aston Villa ace John McGinn and West Ham United talisman Declan Rice.
The Red Devils are reportedly eyeing a squad overhaul in the summer and signing a specialist defensive midfielder has been tipped to be the priority for the club’s hierarchy.
Speaking on his YouTube channel Rio Ferdinand presents Five, quoted by MEN, the former defender has urged Manchester United to sign McGinn and Rice in the summer. The Englishman further stated that the club’s hierarchy should bring in players with strong personalities which the squad are lacking at the moment. Ferdinand said:
“Yeah, massively [be happy with the two signings]. I think you’re getting two good characters. I think character is one of the main elements that we need – obviously, you look for a certain amount of class and quality in the players. But I think you need to build the right characters within this squad going forward if you’re going to improve – get the culture right at the football club.”
“You need players to drive that, so if you’re buying and are in the recruitment team this year, I think that’s a big element that needs to be addressed. I think some would say, ‘oh John McGinn, not a sexy enough signing etcetera,’ but I think he’s a very good player and by all accounts a very good lad, a great professional, not afraid to say what he wants to say to people to get the best out of them.
“He’d be good in that element and on the pitch I think he would be good enough. Is he going to elevate us to being Champions League and Premier League winners? Probably not based on just ability, but I think character stands for a lot in this game. Declan Rice, I’ve said enough about him. I love this player, I love this guy. If you’re any of the top teams if you’re West Ham you want to build a team around him.”
Signing McGinn and Rice will be a great acquisition for Manchester United. With Pogba looking likely to move away from the Old Trafford stadium and Nemanja Matic seemingly struggling to cope with the intensity of the Premier League, strengthening the midfield should be the priority of the club’s hierarchy in summer.
However, the aforementioned two players will cost a fortune for the Old Trafford outfit. West Ham might ask over £100 million for their star midfielder and Aston Villa could also ask a similar fee for their Scottish midfielder. So, it will be difficult for the club’s hierarchy to sign both of them.
Manchester United might have to expand their search outside the Premier League in order to sign world-class talents at a feasible price. Meanwhile, Ralf Rangnick appears to be taking over the club’s consultancy role at the end of this season and he has always expressed his desire to sign youngsters.
Manchester United will have to appoint a new manager before setting their targets in the transfer market. The new manager might want to bring in some new faces who might not be the British duo. So, it will be interesting to see who will be the club’s next permanent manager.
