Football news latest: Former Arsenal and Liverpool star Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher have condemned Manchester United talisman Cristiano Ronaldo due to the Portuguese’s lack of defensive contributions.

The Red Devils bought the 36-year-old during the summer transfer window from the Serie A giants Juventus. The forward adapted to the new surroundings like a fish in the water, scoring 10 goals and notching up two assists in 14 appearances in all competitions.

Speaking on CBS quoted by Metro, the former Liverpool defender said that Ronaldo’s numbers are terrific with the Old Trafford outfit but when the striker does not score, he is a passenger for the team. Carragher said:

“How can a club the size of Manchester United still rely on a guy who’s [nearly] 37? He was unbelievable, his goal record is unbelievable, but if he doesn’t score he is a passenger in the game. You have to accept that, that’s a fact. But he scores nearly every game so at the moment you can accept it. If Cristiano Ronaldo went four or five games without scoring, that’s a massive problem for Manchester United.”

Henry echoed the former defender and said that Manchester United are all over the place defensively and when teams do not defend as a unit it is hard to achieve big prizes. The former Arsenal legend said:

“I totally agree, but the problem is when your poison is your medicine you will struggle. You watch the game [against Villarreal], at the end Ronaldo saves them, but when they play they are exposed sometimes because they don’t defend as a unit. And we all know if you don’t do that you cannot win games.”

“And, by the way, we’re talking about winning the Champions League and winning the title in England, not finishing second, third, fourth and going to the quarter-finals and semi-finals. We’re talking about winning, and if you want to win you’ve all got to run.”

Football news latest: Are Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher right about Cristiano Ronaldo?

Football news latest: Blaming Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United’s poor defensive display is unfair from these pundits. The former Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer failed to implement a structural pressing system since arriving at the club and without the Portuguese superstar last season, the Old Trafford outfit were not a good pressing side either.

The 36-year-old has already showcased his goal-scoring prowess since arriving at the club and almost single-handedly carried the team to the round of 16 stage of the Champions League which United failed to do so last season.

Meanwhile, following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United haven’t been able to bring a new manager. With difficult fixtures like Chelsea and Arsenal on the horizon, the Red Devils hierarchy have to act quickly as they are currently sitting eighth in the Premier League table with 17 points in 12 games and any more slip up might put the Old Trafford club in a tough situation to qualify for the Champions League next season.
