Manchester United will have to go through yet another rebuild from next season under the new manager Erik ten Hag.
Meanwhile, a flurry of players appears to be leaving the club this summer after getting frustrated with their role in the squad or being not happy due to the club’s current state.
Reports are claiming up to 10 players are reportedly set to leave the club, while Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic are likely to leave the club for free.
Although a hefty number of players are set to find their future away from the Old Trafford stadium, Manchester United are still well resourced in every area due to their bloated squad.
The Red Devils will not be able to clear up their whole squad and sign new faces in every area in a single transfer window. So, the Old Trafford faithful will have to be patient.
Manchester United should prioritize in which area they need strengthening this summer. And the answer is a new right-back, centre-back, holding midfielder and a deputy forward to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Right-back – Jurrien Timber:
Manchester United are reportedly in contact with Ajax in order to sign the Dutchman. And a fee of around £30 million is reportedly enough to persuade the Eredivisie giants to sell their youngster.
The versatile defender played the majority of the time as a centre-back during his time at Johan Cruyff Arena. However, he can play as a fullback as well. He should not be deployed as a modern fullback who will make overlapping runs every time.
The 20-year-old should be deployed as an inverted right-back who will come narrow and make three at the back with possession and allow Luke Shaw or Alex Telles to go forward. His passing discipline will be handy for Erik ten Hag in playing possession-based football.
The defender is quick, can play threading passes between the lines and also has an eye for long-range passing. However, his physical stature might restrict him from playing as the centre-back in the back four.
Centre-back – Sven Botman:
The centre-back was linked with a move to Newcastle United in January and AC Milan was reportedly in advanced talks with Lille about a potential summer move. However, the 22-year-old’s future is yet to be decided.
Recent reports claimed Manchester United are interested in Botman and a fee of around £25 million is enough for the highly-rated defender. So, given the youngster’s talent, the mentioned fee could be a bargain for Manchester United.
The Red Devils need to strengthen their backline following a disappointing display this season and the 22-year-old could be an apt acquisition. The centre-back is strong, brilliant in the air, good in possession, can play threading passes between the lines and also has an eye for long-range passing.
Meanwhile, there are some concerns about his recovery pace, however, he is quick enough to play in a high defensive line. The defender has enough abilities to solve Manchester United’s defensive deficiency for years to come.
Holding Midfielder – Frenkie De Jong:
Yet another Dutchman on this list and he will be a shrewd purchase for Manchester United. The 25-year-old played as a holding midfielder during his time at Johan Cruyff Arena. However, since joining Barcelona, the midfielder has been playing out of positions due to the presence of Sergio Busquets.
The Catalan giants are reportedly ready to cash in on their star man due to the club’s financial crisis and the Dutchman is the most saleable asset the Blaugrana have at the moment. Reports are claiming that La Liga giants will be happy to sell De Jong if they receive a significant offer. And Erik ten Hag is reportedly pushing to make this deal happen.
Frenkie De Jong will be an apt midfield option to address the midfield issue. The 25-year-old’s passing discipline will help Ten Hag play a high-pressing attacking brand of football without concerns about many turnovers.
With a structure of three backs holding a high-line and a holding midfielder in front, the Red Devils boss will be able to play two more advanced midfielders rather than playing with a double pivot.
Striker – Darwin Nunez:
The Uruguayan is reportedly on the wishlist of Manchester United and the Red Devils could make a move for the young forward. However, reports are claiming that the 22-year-old will only join a club who will be able to offer him Champions League football.
The Red Devils should do every possible thing to make this deal happen. The youngster is quick, strong, brilliant in the air and also extremely hard-working. He will help Erik ten Hag in implementing a high-pressing system.
So, Nunez could be a perfect candidate to play as a second fiddle to Cristiano Ronaldo in the first season before establishing himself as a regular starter.
There are suggestions that Manchester United need to replace Paul Pogba. However, the Red Devils will have four midfielders in the squad – Donny Van De Beek, Bruno Fernandes, Fred and Scott McTominey – and James Garner will return from a loan spell. So, signing a holding midfielder will be enough.
Meanwhile, Manchester United should keep youngsters like Amad Diallo, Facundo Pellistri and James Garner in the squad and let them develop under Erik ten Hag’s tutelage. Providing them with the proper coaching will aid them in their development rather than letting them go on loan.
