Frenkie de Jong is touted as one of the best midfielders in the world at the moment. However, Barcelona boss Xavi didn’t use him in his preferred position in the first preseason game against Inter Miami on Tuesday.

The Blaugrana are reportedly eager to cash in on the midfielder this summer, while they have already agreed on a fee with Manchester United

However, reports have emerged that the player hasn’t been entertained by the prospect of joining the Old Trafford stadium. A few reports suggested that it is due to his eagerness to play in the Champions League and a few other reports have claimed he doesn’t want to leave Barcelona until he gets the deferred wages that he owes from the club.

Meanwhile, Barcelona sent a clear message to the Dutchman on Tuesday that he doesn’t feature in Xavi’s plan for the upcoming season to play in his preferred position which is in midfield.

Frenkie de Jong didn’t start the game for the La Liga giants and came on in the second half and surprisingly was deployed in the centre-back in order to fill the void of Gerard Pique.

Although the midfielder played in defence during his time at Ajax a few times under Erik ten Hag, it shows that Barcelona are pressuring the midfielder to accept the proposal of joining Manchester United.

Our View:

It has turned out to be one of the weirdest transfer saga in recent years. If the midfielder is reluctant to leave Barcelona and join the Old Trafford stadium then why the Red Devils are still investing their time in this deal.

If it is due to Ten Hag’s eagerness to sign the midfielder up then will it be a wise decision to start a rebuild with a player who doesn’t even want to play for the club?

Meanwhile, early in the transfer window, Jurrien Timber was Ten Hag’s priority target for the defence, however, after understanding the player’s stance of staying put at the Johan Cruyff Arena, the Red Devils’ hierarchy quickly shifted their attention to the other option and have signed Lisandro Martínez since.

But, it is baffling to see Manchester United are still in pursuit of Frenkie de Jong. That must mean, whatever the story is out there at the moment, the player has indicated that he would join Manchester United, but there must be a reason why he is delaying this deal. He might have some demands from Barcelona, it could be the deferred wages. Only time will tell the truth.
