Erik Ten Hag is reportedly favourite to become the next Manchester United manager and we are going to discuss how he might line-up in his first season.
The Dutchman likes to control the game with possession and therefore, the players need to be technically sound and comfortable with the ball in order to break into the 52-year-old’s starting eleven.
With Manchester United currently sitting in sixth in the table and Champions League qualification looking out of reach at the moment, Ten Hag might struggle to persuade world-class talents to join the Old Trafford stadium. So, he might have to work with the same players who are already at the club.
Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see how many of the players who are currently on loan will end up playing under the Dutchman and Donny Van De Beek might be one of the names who could find regular first-team action at Old Trafford next season.
Manchester United predicted line-up under Ten Hag:
David De Gea:
Despite the Spaniard’s struggle with the ball on his feet, he might continue between the sticks next season. Being comfortable with possession is the main criteria to play under Ten Hag, so, the former Atletico Madrid man might find himself out of the starting eleven in future, but his place is secure for next season at least.
The Red Devils hierarchy might be reluctant to invest in their fullback position. So, the new manager will have to continue with the same players and between Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot, the Portuguese is most likely to start due to his technical ability.
The Frenchman has every attribute to play under any manager in the world and he will start every game if he manages to stay fit.
The Swedish has done well when he has been deployed alongside the world cup winner. So, he might start consistently ahead of club captain Harry Maguire.
Despite his struggle this season, the Englishman has showcased that he is the best full-back that the Red Devils have at the moment. So, he will be the first choice left-back for Ten Hag as well.
It is not clear yet as to who Manchester United will go for the defensive midfield position in the summer. But, given we are building this team with the players who are already at the club, the Serbian will be a regular starter for Manchester United. He is the only specialist holding midfielder that the Red Devils have at the moment.
With Pogba looking likely to leave, the Scotsman could be the best option for the Dutchman in the midfield. He is dynamic, strong, has an eye for long passing and is also efficient in scoring goals from distance. Under an elite manager, he might overcome his weaknesses and could be an asset for the 52-year-old.
Donny van de Beek:
This might be controversial but Ten Hag is expected to go with Donny Van De Beek over Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese has done exceptionally well since arriving at the club. But, Van de Beek will be ahead of the former Sporting captain, given his discipline in passing.
Fernandes loses possession too often in the middle of the park which allows the opponents’ transitional moments. Ten Hag wants to control the game with possession. So, Van de Beek will be a better option than the 27-year-old.
The Englishman is technically gifted and will be a perfect candidate to start under the 52-year-old. He has shown glimpses to becoming a great player at Old Trafford and could establish himself as an integral part of the Dutchman’s system.
Cristiano Ronaldo will leave the club if Manchester United fail to secure a place in the Champions League next season. And Rashford could end up in the centre-forward position. The Englishman will overcome his difficulties at some point and will be able to display his best.
Ten Hag likes to work with young talents and the Swedish has broken into the starting eleven this season. So, he will play more regularly at Old Trafford next season and develop under the tutelage of the Dutchman.
