Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has asked the Red Devils hierarchy to appoint Diego Simeone to succeed Ralf Rangnick

The Argentine boss joined the Rojiblancos back in 2011 and since then he has guided the Spanish giants to two La Liga titles and as many Europa League glory, also won Copa del Rey, Spanish super cup and UEFA Super cup. Atlético Madrid has established themselves as the superpower of Spanish football during the 51-year-old’s tenure and broke the dominance of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Speaking on Overlap Live, quoted by United in focus, the former midfielder has urged Manchester United to bring Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone. The United legend believes that the Argentine’s personality will be a perfect fit for the Old Trafford outfit. Keane said:

“If you look at United in the last few years, David Moyes’ contract was up at Everton. Louis Van Gaal was available and didn’t cost any compensation. Jose Mourinho was available. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was pretty straightforward. It’s as if (United) won’t go to prise a top manager away from a club.

“People say, ‘Well, he’s already tied up with a club’. But if you really want a manager, the same as you want a player, you go and get him. You go and get the manager you think is the right manager for your club. None of this, ‘He’s not available for two years’. If he’s the right manager for Man United, go and get him. Pay the money, whatever it takes. Because you pay fortunes for players.

“He’s done great things. Big character, big personality, doesn’t mess round with players. Go and get Simeone.”

Our View:

Although Simeone has been a great success for Atletico Madrid, the Argentine might not be the right fit for Manchester United. The Old Trafford faithful want to experience expansive free-flowing football from their beloved club, however, the 51-year-old’s style of play is contrary to that.

On the other hand, after enjoying a great time at the Spanish capital for over a decade, the Rojiblancos are enduring a difficult season this term under the Argentine boss. So, it might not be the right decision to appoint a manager who is not at the peak of his career. The club’s hierarchy have already made the same mistakes twice with Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho. Therefore, they should learn from their earlier mistakes.

Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino has been mentioned as the favourite to succeed Ralf Rangnick. However, signing Erik Ten Hag might be a better option for Manchester United.

It will be interesting to see who will become Manchester United’s next manager. Rangnick will be appointed as the consultant for two years at the end of this season and if the club management give power to the 63-year-old to make the decisions then the Red Devils fans could be optimistic about their future. Otherwise, the club might struggle under the new manager as well.
