Latest sports news for today: Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has urged Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick to get rid of midfield duo Fred and Scott McTominay.
The Red Devils displayed a poor performance against Newcastle United on Monday night and only managed to come away with one point after trailing in the first half. The midfield duo started the game but following a disappointing display, the German boss decided to substitute Fred at the halftime mark.
Speaking with ESPN FC quoted by Express, the Scotsman has said that the biggest problem Manchester United have at the moment is their midfield. The midfield duo Fred and McTominay aren’t good enough to play for any of the top teams.
Nicol further stated that United’s front four are struggling to impact the game due to the lack of service from the midfield duo and if they can’t perform against the bottom side then it will be even tough to compete against the quality oppositions. He said:
“Look at the middle of the park, who’s going to have Fred and McTominay in their team? Of the good sides, none of them. So, you look at the front four and you think ‘why are these guys not producing?’. Well, are they getting enough of the ball? Well, if you can’t get enough of the ball against Newcastle, who quite frankly look as though they’re going to go down in my opinion, then what chance have you got?
“So you could have anybody you want upfront that you could pick, if you can’t get them the ball you’re not going to score goals. And if the two in the middle can’t get the front four the ball, and they’re not stopping anybody get through to the backline… So as much as it’s Rangnick’s fault, a lot of it is the players are just not good enough.”
Latest sports news for today: Can Ralf Rangnick resolve the midfield issue at Manchester United?
Latest sports news for today: Manchester United have been struggling with their midfield issues for the past few campaigns. However, the former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer didn’t fancy resolving the problem and spent big money in the transfer market on the forward players.
The Red Devils struggle to win the midfield battle in almost every game but still, they persist with Fred and Scott McTominay. Although the midfield duo are dynamic and energetic, they lack efficiency with the ball. They misplace passes quite a lot which leads to the transitional moments for the opposition and that puts the United defence under pressure.
So, it is an absolute necessity for the interim boss Ralf Rangnick to sign a new midfielder in January who will be efficient with the ball and also keen on working hard without the possession.
The Old Trafford outfit have displayed lacklustre performances in their last two games against the bottom sides and the German boss will be looking to get back to winning ways in the next game against Burnley.
