Latest sports news for today: Former West Ham United forward Frank McAvennie has urged Manchester United not to sell veteran striker Edinson Cavani in the upcoming winter transfer window.

The 34-year-old is heavily linked with a move away from the Old Trafford stadium in January and the Spanish giants Barcelona are reportedly leading the race to land the Uruguay international.

Speaking with Football Insider, the Scotsman has said that the Red Devils should not allow Cavani’s departure in January and the former striker thinks that the Uruguayan still has a key role to play for the Old Trafford outfit this term. He said:

“You have to keep him. He’s got to be one of the best attackers at Man United. For me, there are few strikers better than Cavani on his day. You have a 20-plus goal striker there. He hasn’t quite shown it this season but we saw it last year. Stick him in attack and give him the same number of chances as Ronaldo, you will see a similar goal return.

“Letting him go is madness. He can still do a job, a great job. I’m a big fan of his and I don’t know why he’s not playing more. Maybe it’s because there is an emphasis on the younger players at Man United. That’s fine but sometimes you need experience and Cavani has over 300 career goals.”

Latest sports news for today: Should Manchester United keep Edinson Cavani until the end of this season?

Latest sports news for today: Keeping Edinson Cavani until the end of this season will be the right decision from Manchester United. The 34-year-old has always performed at his best whenever he was given chances and has never failed to impress the Old Trafford faithful.

However, the forward has struggled with his injury issues and had to stay out of action for the majority of his time at the record Premier League champions. But, the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo has filled that gap for the Mancunians this season.

Nevertheless, the Uruguayan is one of the prolific goal scorers that the Red Devils have at the moment along with Cristiano Ronaldo and the 34-year-old’s presence in the squad will help Ralf Rangnick’s side to achieve their lofty ambitions at the end of this season.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Edinson Cavani at Manchester United. But, keeping the experienced campaigner will be the right decision for the club hierarchy which will also help the young forwards to develop under the veteran’s tutelage.
