The new Premier League season is right upon us and Manchester United will kick start their new campaign on Sunday afternoon when they will welcome Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils endured a disappointing season last term but there were positive signs during the pre-season friendlies before they failed to win the last three games.
The Old Trafford faithful are optimistic that their fortune will be turned under the guidance of the new manager Erik ten Hag, however, whilst he is trying to implement his philosophy in the squad, the club’s hierarchy haven’t managed to deliver in the transfer market so far this summer, albeit the window is open until the end of this month.
Meanwhile, Brighton will be coming into this game off the back of a thumping 5-1 victory against La Liga side Espanyol in their last pre-season friendly last weekend. So, the Seagulls will be full of confidence ahead of this game.
Manchester United vs Brighton team news:
Cristiano Ronaldo’s future is still uncertain at Manchester United, however, he played the first half against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday and the boss has confirmed the 37-year-old isn’t fit enough to start games. So, it can be expected that Anthony Martial will lead the line in the opening fixture.
Jadon Sancho and Luke Shaw were sidelined in the last weekend’s double friendlies against Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano due to minor issues and they could return to the fray in this fixture.
Erik ten Hag will have his full squad to choose from but the new signings Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen who joined the squad late in the preseason will be involved with the squad on Sunday but might not start the game.
Alex Telles is reportedly set to join Sevilla and will not be part of this game, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Brandon Williams and Phil Jones are all expected to remain sidelined due to the fact that they are not in the new boss’ plan for the upcoming season.
David De Gea will start between the sticks, while Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Tyrell Malacia could be the back four for Manchester United.
There are question marks about who should be the defensive pairing in this fixture, and considering how Ten Hag has picked his team during the pre-season, Maguire and Lindelof might be his preferred choice before Lisandro Martínez gets match fit.
Having failed to add quality in the midfield in this transfer window, Ten Hag has left with only Fred and Scott McTominey at his disposal for the midfield, so the Brazilian and the Scottish duo will commence in the engine room on Sunday. And Bruno Fernandes will be the more advanced midfielder.
Jadon Sancho should return to the starting eleven against Graham Potter’s side, while Marcus Rashford could start on the opposite flank. Anthony Martial will be the striker in this fixture.
After the Premier League changed their substitution rule from three to five, many players will get more chances this season. So, Donny van de Beek and Eriksen are expected to be involved in this game from the bench.
Manchester United predicted line-up against Brighton & Hove Albion(4-2-3-1):
David De Gea; Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Tyrell Malacia; Fred, Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes; Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford
