Manchester United are reportedly unsure about the appointment of Erik Ten Hag due to the Dutchman’s lack of experience at the highest level, as per the report in the English outlet The Telegraph (via Express).

The Red Devils’ hierarchy are currently in search of a new manager and as per the recent reports, Erik Ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino are the leading candidates to take charge at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, the club already had a positive discussion with the Ajax boss.

However, the 52-year-old’s camp believe that the record Premier League champions are sceptical about the Dutchman’s appointment, given his lack of experience at the highest level.

Despite having a great time with Ajax, the 52-year-old has never worked outside the Eredivisie as he previously worked for Utrecht and Go Ahead Eagles. Ten Hag also had a stint at Bayern Munich where he worked as an assistant to Pep Guardiola.

Meanwhile, the report further stated that the Ajax boss is accustomed to working for a club that is well structured from top to bottom. However, he might not get that luxury at Old Trafford.

Although Manchester United are concerned about Erik Ten Hag’s lack of experience, the club’s hierarchy might still go for the Dutchman, given their previous sour experience with established names like Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.

Our View:

The stories like this raise the concern about on what basis the Red Devils’ hierarchy are going to select their next permanent manager. Erik Ten Hag has already showcased his managerial prowess for Ajax by winning multiple league titles. The Dutchman has also proved his traits in the Champions League.

The other potential candidate Mauricio Pochettino does not have great success at the highest level. The Argentine struggled against top-six clubs during his time at Tottenham Hotspur and he hasn’t had a great time either in Ligue 1 against tougher oppositions.

Meanwhile, when Pep Guardiola joined Barcelona back in 2008, he didn’t have much experience in managing at the highest level and the same can be said about Xavi. However, while the 51-year-old found his way through to bring success to the Catalan giants, the latter is also showing promises of that.

Therefore, Erik Ten Hag would be a great acquisition for Manchester United regardless of his experience at the highest level. If he was to bring success at Old Trafford then he will gain experience while at the job.
