Manchester United are reportedly very close to finalizing a deal for Benfica star Darwin Nunez as per the journalist Dean Jones.
The Red Devils are on the hunt for a new centre-forward following the departure of Edinson Cavani. Meanwhile, on-loan star Anthony Martial is also reportedly eager to leave the club this summer.
Erik ten Hag is keen on strengthening his forward line this summer and wants to sign a young forward who will play as a deputy to Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 22-year-old enjoyed a stellar campaign in the recently concluded season, scoring 34 goals and registering four assists in 41 games in all competitions. The youngster has raised his worth after scoring in both legs of the Champions League quarter-finals against Liverpool.
Meanwhile, speaking on GiveMeSport, the journalist Dean Jones has stated that Manchester United are ‘extremely close’ to finalizing a deal for Darwin Nunez.
Jones further claimed that the Red Devils considered Atletico Madrid to be their main rival in securing the Uruguayan’s deal. However, there are many other clubs also interested in the 22-year-old. He said:
“One source described this deal to United to me as being ‘extremely close’. They consider Atletico Madrid as their main rivals to sign him, from what I hear, but obviously, loads around Europe are looking. If Darwin does move to Old Trafford, it will be a brilliant signing for the Ten Hag era.”
Darwin Nunez could be a perfect addition to the Manchester United squad. And given his age, the 22-year-old can become a mainstay in the Erik ten Hag’s system for years to come.
With Cristiano Ronaldo likely to stay at the Old Trafford for one more season at least, the Uruguayan will be getting the luxury of learning under one of the best forwards in the world.
However, Manchester United should prioritize signing a new midfielder this summer. The Red Devils are struggling with their midfield department for quite a while now and following the impending departures of Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic, the need of strengthening the engine room has become even more important.
Frenkie De Jong is reportedly linked with a move to the Old Trafford stadium and the Red Devils hierarchy should get this deal done as quickly as possible before shifting their focus on addressing other areas.
