Manchester United are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji as per the report in German outlet Sport1

The 26-year-old joined the German giants back in 2018 from Swiss giants FC Basel. Since then, he has established himself as a regular starter for BVB, scoring three goals in 148 appearances in all competitions.

However, with only 18 months remaining in his current contract, the defender has reportedly rejected to extend his deal with Marco Rose’s side. As per the report, the Switzerland international has demanded around €12 million a year in salary to sign a contract extension, however, the German club is offering around €9.5 million. Therefore, the centre-back is reluctant to commit his future at the Signal Iduna Park.

The report further claims that the 26-year-old could leave at the end of this season and Manchester United are leading the race to sign the Swiss in the summer. A fee of around €30 million would be enough for the defender’s signature and Ralf Rangnick is pushing to get this deal over the line.

Our View:

Signing Manuel Akanji would be a very good addition to Manchester United’s defence. With Harry Maguire struggling to showcase his best this campaign and Eric Bailly and Phil Jones failing to win interim manager Ralf Rangnick’s trust, strengthening the defence could be a shrewd decision by the Red Devils hierarchy.

The 26-year-old is quick, strong, comfortable with possession and also very good at defending. So, he has the necessary attributes to replace Maguire if the Englishman continues to perform poorly. In addition to that, the mentioned fee is feasible for the record Premier League champions.

So, Akanji would certainly bolster Manchester United’s fragile defence. The Red Devils are poor defensively this season and only managed to keep a handful of clean sheets, despite David De Gea being the best player for the Old Trafford outfit.

Meanwhile, despite displaying a promising first-half performance against Burnley on Tuesday night, Manchester United only managed to come away with one point. Following this result, the Red Devils have lost ground for the top-four race and are currently fifth in the Premier League with 39 points in 23 games.
