Manchester United are reportedly linked with a move for Sporting CP midfielder Joao Palhinha as per the report in English outlet Mirror

The 26-year-old has caught the attention of big European clubs after displaying promising performances with the Lions over the past few campaigns. The midfielder was the key member of Ruben Amorim’s side who won the Primeira Liga title last term.

According to the report, Joao Palhinha dreams of playing in the Premier League and Manchester United are among the English clubs who are showing interest in the Portugal international.

The report further claims that Sporting slapped a £33 million price tag on their star man last summer but due to the lack of concrete offer, the reigning Primeira Liga champions have been forced to reduce the asking price to around £25 million.

However, signing Palhinha might not be easy for Manchester United as Spanish giants Sevilla and Atlético de Madrid are also keen on signing the talented midfielder.

Our View:

Manchester United should sign a defensive midfielder before the end of this January transfer window. The Red Devils lack qualities and depth in their midfield department, therefore, signing a new midfielder should be high on the wishlist for the interim boss Ralf Rangnick

The 63-year-old boss currently has Scott McTominay, Fred and Bruno Fernandes at his disposal. Nemanja Matic is already 34-year-old and has struggled to cope with the intensity of the Premier League in recent times and Paul Pogba is looking likely to leave the club at the end of this season.

Meanwhile, reports were suggesting that the record Premier League champions need to trim down their squad in order to sign new players. Following the departure of Anthony Martial, Donny Van De Beek and Jesse Lingard are also linked with a move away from the Old Trafford stadium. Therefore, the club hierarchy should prioritize a new midfielder in the final few days of the transfer window after securing the aforementioned players’ exits.

It will be interesting to see what the Red Devils hierarchy decide about their midfield issue. Manchester United have been struggling with their midfield over the last few campaigns but the club’s hierarchy have failed to address that problem during this period.
