Manchester United are reportedly in the pole position to sign Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio as per the report in Portuguese outlet A Bola

The 20-year-old is enjoying a productive campaign this term, scoring four goals and registering 15 clean sheets in 35 appearances in all competitions.

According to the report, Manchester United are planning to convince the Sporting CP hierarchy to sell their youngster in this summer transfer window.

The Portuguese giants will not accept anything less than €45 million which is the defender’s release clause. The Red Devils could initially offer around €40 million which would raise up to the said amount including bonuses.

The report further claims that Newcastle United are also interested in the Portuguese youngster, however a move to the record Premier League champions is gathering pace.

Our View:

Manchester United will be looking for a squad overhaul in the summer and strengthening the backline will be one of the key areas that need to be resolved.

The Red Devils have endured a disappointing campaign this term, conceding 56 goals in the Premier League which is the worst defensive display in their history of this competition.

Manchester United lacked options in their centre-back position this term, given the disappointing displays from Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire. The summer arrival Raphael Varane has also struggled to showcase his best due to injury issues.

On the other hand, despite being in the squad, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly were never in contention for a first-team berth. So, strengthening the backline should be an absolute necessity this summer.

Therefore, signing Goncalo Inacio could be a great acquisition for Manchester United. The defender has showcased his talent at the highest level of European football this season. So, he could go straight into the starting eleven at the Old Trafford stadium.
