Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is full of praise for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong amid the Red Devils links.
Recent reports claimed that the 20 times Premier League champions are in contact with the Catalan giants about a potential move for the 25-year-old. Transfer journalist Gerard Romero went a bid ahead and claimed that the deal is 95% complete and will be finalized before the end of this month.
Reacting to this news on his YouTube channel Five (via Metro), Rio Ferdinand expressed his excitement about a possible move for the Netherlands international and heaped praise on the 25-year-old’s abilities. He said:
“They’re saying he could be the first signing under Ten Hag, if he is I will be sitting here going ‘Yes, great sign of things to come’. He’s 25-years-old, not huge in terms of his frame, but what he has got is he’s quick with the ball, really good dribbler, can get out of tight situations, good passer over the short and medium distances.
“As a team who are looking for players who can control the ball and the game and get the team functioning in terms of balanced possession, I think he would be a good addition to the team. He’s not someone who scores loads of goals, but he is more in terms of the controlling of the game.
“This season, Manchester United are definitely losing Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, so it [the midfield] does need reinforcement. I think he will be a fantastic signing if this deal goes ahead.
” [From] Ajax to Barcelona the fee was around £77million and they’re talking between £60-70m so in today’s market it would be a very good signing. He thrived under Ten Hag’s management. He was the outstanding player in that [Ajax] team.”
Signing Frenkie De Jong will be a great addition to the Manchester United squad. However, it is not clear yet whether the Dutchman would want to join the Old Trafford stadium or not.
Reports are claiming that the Champions League is a crucial factor in determining his new destination. However, the Red Devils will not be able to offer him that. But, regardless of his preference, the new boss Erik ten Hag is trying to persuade the 25-year-old into joining the record Premier League champions.
Meanwhile, a recent report has stated that Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez has understood the need of offloading a few players in order to generate cash to address other issues in the squad. And the Spaniard has permitted the Dutchman’s departure.
So, it will be interesting to see what Frenkie De Jong will decide about his future. Barcelona are seemingly prepared to cash in on their star midfielder and Manchester United are the most interested party in signing the highly-rated midfielder.
