Manchester United are reportedly showing interest in signing AC Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer as per the report in Italian outlet Calciomercatoweb.it.
Erik ten Hag has earlier stated that he is looking to reinforce the midfield as well as strengthening the forward line is his priority this summer.
Frenkie De Jong is mentioned as the potential target for the Dutch boss in order to address the Red Devils’ midfield issues. But, it appears to be tough for the Red Devils hierarchy to convince the player to join the Old Trafford stadium, given the midfielder is keen on staying at Barcelona.
Manchester United have already signed Christian Eriksen for free and now AC Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer is linked with a move to the record Premier League champions.
Calciomercatoweb is claiming that the Algeria international is one of the names on the Red Devils’ wishlist and they could make a proposal to the Serie A champions.
The report further claims that Manchester United might include Donny van de Beek in this deal to lower the transfer fee as Ismael Bennacer is valued at around €45 million by the Rossoneri.
Strengthening the midfield should be a priority for Manchester United. But, Ismael Bennacer might not be a realistic target for Erik ten Hag this summer.
The Dutchman has opted to sign players who he knows or has previously worked at Ajax Amsterdam. And therefore, this rumour could be generated by the player’s agent in order to gain a better deal at AC Milan, given his current contract will expire in 2024.
Manchester United currently have Fred and Scott McTominey in their squad who can play the deep-lying midfielder role, while Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek are all comfortable playing in the advanced midfielder position.
The Red Devils can’t start another season with Fred and McTominay as their midfield options, given they have shown their limitations over the past few campaigns. Although Charlie Savage and Zidane Iqbal have been impressive in the first two preseason games, it will be a huge ask from those two teenagers to step up and become the solution for Manchester United if the club’s hierarchy failed to sign a new midfielder.
James Garner is another player who has returned from a productive loan spell at Nottingham Forest. But, he hasn’t featured in any of the games due to minor injury issues. So, it will be interesting to see whether he can impress the new boss or he will be sent out on loan once again this term.
