The 22-year-old signed for the Bianconeri back in 2019 from Ajax Amsterdam for a whopping £75.5 million. Since then, the defender has made 72 appearances in Serie A, scoring nine goals. He helped the club in winning one Scudetto, Coppa Italia and a Supercoppa Italiana during this period.
According to the report, De Ligt is set to leave the Italian giants at the end of this season and Manchester United are among the suitors who are pursuing the Netherlands international. Along with the record Premier League champions, PSG and Bayern Munich are also interested in signing the youngster.
The report further claims that the defender has a €130 million(£110m) release clause in his current contract but the Bianconeri understand that they will not get that much money from the Dutchman’s sale and might have to settle for way less than that. Mino Riola wants to take his client to Barcelona, but the Catalan giants might not be able to sign the 22-year-old due to their financial difficulties.
Can Manchester United sign Matthijs De Ligt?
Signing Matthijs De Ligt will be a great acquisition for Manchester United. The Dutchman has performed quite well during his time at the Allianz Stadium after a tough first campaign and the Old Trafford faithful will be hoping that they can experience the same performance from the 22-year-old if the Red Devils can sign the highly-rated defender.
The Red Devils signed Raphael Varane during the summer transfer window to address their defensive issues. But the Frenchman has struggled with his injury problems and the Old Trafford outfit have continued to leak goals in this campaign.
So, signing a defender of De Ligt’s calibre will be a shrewd purchase from Manchester United. However, in order to sign the Netherlands international, Ralf Rangnick will have to trim his squad to make space for the new signing.
Meanwhile, following a Covid-19 outbreak in the squad, Manchester United have returned to training on Tuesday to prepare for their next game against Newcastle United on 27th December. After back to back victories against Crystal Palace and Norwich, the Red Devils boss will be looking to keep their winning run going on Monday night as well.
