Manchester United punish Wan-Bissaka, players questioning the defender’s commitment

Manchester United have reportedly punished Aaron Wan-Bissaka after the defender failed to report for training, as per the journalist Duncan Castles.

Following a decent couple of seasons at the Old Trafford stadium, the 24-years-old is enduring a difficult campaign this term. Following the arrival of interim manager Ralf Rangnick the first team minutes have dried up for the Englishman, making only three appearances in all competitions. He was among the absentees in the last few games due to illness.

Meanwhile, speaking on Transfer Window Podcast, quoted by Express, Castles said that Wan-Bissaka has missed several training sessions due to illness and he didn’t appear in training on one occasion and informed the club through a phone call.

The journalist further claimed that this is ‘unusual’ for a football club as in general, the team doctor assesses the severity of the player’s illness before making the final decision. But, Wan-Bissaka didn’t turn up for training and therefore, the club punished the player for his behaviour.

The players have also questioned the defender’s commitment and his discipline. Castles said:

“My information is that he has missed a lot of training sessions. I’m told that on at least one occasion he failed to turn up to training, citing illness as a reason, calling in to say that he was ill and that’s why he wasn’t coming in for training.

” That’s very unusual at a football club. Generally, if you have an illness you’ll come into the training ground, allow the club doctors to assess you, and then they make a decision in collaboration with the player as to whether you train and obviously the best way to get you healthy again to play.

“I’m told that he’s been disciplined by the club for failing to turn up to training. Other players have been told that there is a disciplinary issue involved, other players have commented on his attitude and issues there have been with him around the training ground.”

Our View:

Situations like this show the lack of authority Manchester United have at the moment. Ralf Rangnick arrived only a few months back but the lack of control inside the dressing room is carried on from the previous regime.

The reports about the dressing room cliques and players being unhappy due to them having to leave the training centre in the dark are all reflections of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s failure to impose his authority inside the dressing room.

Rangnick has taken an intelligent route and is exposing the truth in press conferences. However, this approach hasn’t gone down well among the players as Anthony Martial previously and now Jesse Lingard have made their frustration public.

So, there is a big job in hand for Rangnick to assemble his squad and implement his philosophy. However, given he only has a few months to work on, it will be hard for the German boss to achieve success with so many issues in the squad.
