Manchester United have reportedly received a big boost in pursuit of Juventus defender Matthijs De Ligt.

The Red Devils are likely to strengthen their defensive department this summer and reports were claiming that United’s new boss Erik ten Hag is interested in reuniting with the 22-years-old this summer at the Old Trafford stadium.

According to the report in Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport(via CaughtOffside), Juventus are in contact with the Dutchman’s representatives in order to extend his contract, given the defender’s current deal will expire in 2024. However, both parties are struggling to agree on the release clause.

The Bianconeri are willing to insert a release clause of around £98 million, while the player wants the amount below the £70 million mark. Meanwhile, there is also disagreement regarding the wage despite the fact that the 22-year-old is the highest-paid player at Allianz Stadium. So, the report claims that De Ligt might opt to leave the Serie A giants this summer.

Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly leading the race to sign the Netherlands international this summer. And it will be interesting to see where he will spend the next season.

Our View:

Despite having enough numbers in their defensive department, Manchester United still need to strengthen their backline. Phil Jones and Eric Bailly hardly ever play first-team football. On the other hand, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have failed to showcase their best in recent seasons. The new arrival Raphael Varane struggled with his injury problems last season.

Therefore, United need to sign a new centre-back in order to address their leaky defence. Matthijs de Ligt could be an apt acquisition for the Red Devils and his previous experience of playing under Erik ten Hag would help him to settle down in the new surroundings quickly.

However, the club’s hierarchy are struggling to get deals over the line this summer. They are in contact with Barcelona in order to sign Frenkie de Jong who is reportedly Erik ten Hag’s priority target. But, despite spending more than a month on this deal they have managed to find an agreement neither with Barcelona nor with the player.

So, it is highly likely that the new boss will have to work with the same players who are currently in the squad. After managing the squad for more than six months, the ex-boss Ralf Rangnick said the Red Devils need a squad overhaul in order to go back to the summit. But, the club does not seem interested in listening to their former manager.
