Manchester United had reportedly sent scouts to watch Benfica ace Darwin Nunez in action against Liverpool in the Champions League as per the report in the English outlet Mirror

The Red Devils are reportedly keen on signing a new striker in the summer, given Edinson Cavani is expected to leave the club at the end of this season and Cristiano Ronaldo may also leave if the record Premier League champions failed to secure a place in the Champions League next season.

The 22-year-old is one of the names on the wishlist for the Old Trafford outfit in order to replace the youngster’s compatriot Cavani. The Benfica star is enjoying a great campaign this term, scoring 26 goals and notching up three assists in 32 appearances in all competitions.

According to the report, Manchester United and Arsenal are ready to battle out for Nunez in the summer transfer window and they both had sent scouts to watch the youngster in action against Liverpool on Tuesday night.

The 22-year-old raised his worth even more after scoring a goal against the Premier League giants in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

Our View:

Signing Darwin Nunez will be an excellent acquisition for Manchester United. The 22-year-old has a similar playing style to his compatriot Edinson Cavani. The youngster works extremely hard off the ball and is difficult to mark, given his constant movements around the penalty area.

Meanwhile, the Benfica forward not only showed his goal-scoring prowess in the Primeira Liga but also in the Champions League. So, the youngster will be a perfect candidate to lead the line at Old Trafford under the new impending manager Erik Ten Hag.

The Dutchman plays with high intensity and pressing the opposition higher up the field is one of his team’s main attributes. So, the Uruguayan’s energy would be an asset to have for the new boss.

However, qualification in the Champions League will be a necessity to sign Nunez. The forward has already expressed his desire to play in Europe’s elite club competition next season and he will play for a club whoever will be able to offer him that.
