Following a disappointing defeat against the top four rival Arsenal, Manchester United will entertain Chelsea at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
Ralf Rangnick’s side displayed a much-improved performance against the Gunners last weekend but it wasn’t enough to come away victorious against Mikel Arteta’s side. The Red Devils lost the game by 3-1 and it seems to be the curtain for their aspiration for the top four finish.
The record Premier League champions are currently sitting sixth in the league with 54 points in 34 games. After beating Manchester United, Arsenal have now placed themselves in the fourth spot with 60 points in 33 games. The Europa League qualification is the most likely outcome for United next season.
On the other hand, Chelsea haven’t had a great period in recent weeks either. Following three consecutive defeats in a row in all competitions, the Blues have returned to winning ways last weekend against West Ham.
Manchester United team news against Chelsea:
Raphael Varane and Scott McTominay returned to the starting eleven last weekend after recovering from injuries. Having missed the last fixture due to injury issues, Paul Pogba will remain sidelined for this encounter as well along with Edinson Cavani, Fred and Luke Shaw.
Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho will also be set to miss out on Thursday’s game due to injury and illness respectively.
In form, David De Gea is expected to start the game between the sticks, while Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof, Raphael Varane and Alex Telles should be the back four for Manchester United. The Brazilian fullback displayed poor performance in the last game, however, he might keep his place due to the lack of options available for the Red Devils in the left-back position.
Nemanja Matic will be paired up with Scott McTominay as the deep-lying midfielders. Bruno Fernandes might keep his place in the starting line-up on Thursday night despite struggling to showcase his best in recent games.
Marcus Rashford could replace Sancho in the left-wing position and Anthony Elanga should be on the opposite flank. Cristiano Ronaldo will be the lone striker for Rangnick’s side.
Manchester United’s predicted line-up against Chelsea(4-2-3-1):
David De Gea; Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof, Raphael Varane, Alex Telles; Nemanja Matic, Scott McTominay; Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Elanga; Cristiano Ronaldo
