The January transfer window arrived with the requirement of strengthening the midfield department and on the transfer deadline day, it is looking likely that Manchester United will have to finish the season with the same issue in their squad.
The interim boss Ralf Rangnick was reportedly willing to strengthen his squad and Amadou Haidara, Tyler Adams and Denis Zakaria(set to join Juventus) were among the 63-year-old’s wishlist in order to rectify the midfield issue. But the club’s hierarchy aren’t keen on investing in this transfer window.
The Red Devils prioritised trimming down the squad number this month and they have so far managed to send Anthony Martial and Amad Diallo on loan. Donny Van De Beek is also set to leave the club on a short term loan to Everton until the end of this season.
Jesse Lingard was linked with a move away from the Old Trafford stadium and Newcastle United were credited with an interest. But, the deal hasn’t been materialized yet at the time of writing this article and therefore, the Englishman might have to stay put until the end of this season.
The Greenwood situation:
Mason Greenwood will also be out after the 20-year-old has been arrested with suspicion of assault and rape. The Red Devils released a statement and stated that the Englishman will not take any part in training as well as in the matchday squad while the investigation will take place.
So, the Red Devils’ attacking department which looked quite bloated at the start of this month, has become quite thin at the moment. Following the departure of Anthony Martial and Amad Diallo, and the suspension of Mason Greenwood. Rangnick has left with Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga.
Rashford has failed to showcase his best this season and Sancho is yet to settle down in the new league following his summer arrival from Borussia Dortmund. Edinson Cavani who has struggled with his injury issues since joining the club and Anthony Elanga just started to play regularly with the senior team in the last few weeks.
The transfer window started with the requirement of strengthening the midfield department. But, it is going to end with more holes in the squad.
The fixtures will get tougher and congested from the next month as the Red Devils will have to compete in three different competitions. But, without proper depth in the squad, they might struggle to achieve their objectives at the end of this season.
Liverpool, who are currently ahead of Manchester United, are investing in their squad in order to strengthen the squad depth. Tottenham Hotspur are also closing in on two deals to strengthen the squad.
Meanwhile, Spurs are the direct rival of Manchester United in the race to finish in the top four spot and they might now have the advantage in qualifying in the Champions League next season following their transfer businesses.
Therefore, it will be interesting to see how Manchester United finish the season under Ralf Rangnick. Finishing in the top four spot is the club’s primary aim. However, it will not be easy for the German boss to qualify for the Champions League next season.
