Manchester United are reportedly showing active interest in Villarreal ace Pau Torres as per the report in Spanish outlet Marca

The 25-year-old enjoyed a stellar campaign this term, scoring six goals and registering 14 clean sheets in 46 appearances in all competitions. The Spaniard was an integral part of Unai Emery’s side that went all the way to the semi-final of the Champions League this season.

The highly-rated defender was linked with a move to the Old Trafford stadium last summer, however, opted against that in order to play in the Champions League with the Yellow Submarines. Meanwhile, having finished seventh in La Liga and failed to qualify for Europe’s elite club competition next season, Unai Emery’s side are preparing to cash in on their star man this summer.

According to the report, Manchester United are ready to offer around €50 million for the highly-rated defender. The report further claims that the Red Devils’ new boss Erik ten Hag wants ball-playing centre-backs in his squad and the 25-year-old fits his criteria perfectly.

Our View:

Pau Torres has enjoyed a productive campaign this term and it is expected that Manchester United would be following his development. However, the 25-year-old might not be the right option for the Red Devils.

Despite being good with the ball and excellent in the air, the Spaniard lacks the recovery pace to play in a high defensive line. The centre-back generally plays in a counter-attacking system at the Estadio de la Ceramica which suits him perfectly.

However, Erik ten Hag wants to implement a possession-based and high-pressing style of football. Defenders need to be good on the ball, quick and efficient in one-on-one defending in order to play in this system. But, Pau Torres is neither quick nor good in one-on-one defending.

So, it will be interesting to see whether Manchester United will go for Pau Torres or not, avoiding the Spaniard’s signature will be a shrewd decision by the club’s hierarchy.
