Player ratings: Manchester United only managed to come away with one point against the second-bottom side Newcastle United after displaying a disappointing performance at St James’ Park.

The Magpies went ahead early into the match after capitalising on a poor defensive mistake from the centre-back pairing Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane. The host played with more intensity, desire and hunger than the Red Devils and Rangnick’s side struggled to match that.

Meanwhile, the United boss made two changes at the break and introduced Edinson Cavani and Jadon Sancho into the game and the former scored the equaliser to earn a point from this encounter.

Following this result, Manchester United remained in the seventh position with 28 points in 17 games and the Magpies are currently 19th in the table with 11 points in 19 games.

Manchester United player ratings against Newcastle United:

David De Gea(8/10)(GK):

The Spaniard displayed yet another great performance and saved the day for the Red Devils. He made three or four crucial saves to help his side earn a point.

Diogo Dalot(6/10)(RB):

Endured a poor first half and struggled against Allan Saint-Maximin but played much better in the second half and delivered a great cross for Cavani which the Uruguayan capitalised on to equalize the game.

Raphael Varane(4/10)(CB):

The centre back started the game after recovering from an injury. But, didn’t look match fit and struggled to cope with the speed of the game. Also made quite a few bad errors and one of those ended up in the back of the net.

Harry Maguire(5/10)(CB):

The Englishman also had a poor game and looked shaky in the first half. The United captain needs to find his form as quickly as possible otherwise it will be tough for the Red Devils to finish in the top four spot.

Alex Telles(6/10)(LB):

The left-back provided a great cross for Cavani to score the second goal but the Uruguayan failed to convert the opportunity. Overall a flawless performance from the Brazilian.

After displaying a match-winning performance against Crystal Palace, the Brazilian is starting to show his old self. He was awful with the ball and made a few bad errors which led to the Magpies’ counter-attacks on several occasions. Overall a disappointing outing for the 28-year-old.

Scott McTominay(5/10)(CDM):

Another underwhelming performance from the Scotsman and failed to link up the play from back to front.

Bruno Fernandes(5/10)(CAM):

The Portuguese failed to be involved in the game for the first 45 minutes but was much better in the second half.

Marcus Rashford(4/10)(RW):

The Englishman should be worried about his recent struggles. If he continues to perform like this then, the 24-years-old could find himself out of the team sooner than later.

Cristiano Ronaldo(5/10)(CF):

The 36-year-old expressed his frustration time and time again in this game as the striker found himself isolated due to the lack of service.

Mason Greenwood(4/10)(CF):

The youngster was anonymous in the first half and was taken off after the interval.

Edinson Cavani(7/10)(CF):

The Uruguayan was the best outfield player for Manchester United and scored the equaliser. He should have scored another one as well.

Jadon Sancho(5/10)(RW):

The England international failed to impact the game and his form could be a big headache for the Old Trafford outfit.

Nemanja Matic(6/10)(CDM):

Came on for injured McTominay and did his job well for the last few minutes.
