News of today: Former Arsenal forward Thierry Henry has praised Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay after the Scotsman’s impressive performance against Burnley.
Following a poor performance against Newcastle United on Monday night, the Red Devils have bounced back brilliantly after beating Sean Dyche’s side by 3-1. The 25-year-old scored the opener for Ralf Rangnick‘s side and also ran the midfield for the hosts.
Speaking with Amazon Prime in the post-match show, quoted by TEAMtalk, the Frenchman said that McTominay displayed an excellent performance against the Clarets and showed commitment to what a Manchester United player should display.
Henry further said that the Scotland international’s maturity impressed him the most and the midfielder is also growing as a leader in the squad. He said:
“The symbol of the night was McTominay. He responded really well. The energy, the desire, the commitment is what you want from a player of this club. You’re always going to be compared to the players who came before. But what I like about him is his maturity, on the field and off the field. He played really well but he’s also thinking about the team’s performance. He is maturing a lot as a leader in this squad.”
Belgium manager Roberto Martínez was also involved in the discussion and said that McTominay helped the front four to play with freedom and produce their best. The Scotsman protected his teammates well and also looked threatening going forward. He said:
“He is all action, he makes the front four better. It’s important when you have creative players that you have other players who are willing to work. He was always protecting his teammates and then he was a threat in the final third. It was a beautiful, clinical strike. He was a constant influence. His performance was of the highest level.”
News of today: Can Manchester United midfielder McTominay continue performing like this?
News of today: Scott McTominay displayed one of his best performances against Burnley in the Manchester United shirt since making his debut back in 2017. The midfielder showed his shooting prowess and the ability to work hard without possession.
Meanwhile, the 25-year-old has showcased his talent whenever he has been given the free role in midfield. Against Leeds United last season and also in this campaign, and now against Burnley, the midfielder is showing that he is better when he can influence the game going forward rather than sitting deep and protecting the defence.
So, the Red Devils should sign a defensive midfielder in the upcoming transfer window to allow Scott McTominay and Fred to play box to box roles as they both have previously shown that they can be more influential when they are given the license to play higher up the field.
Meanwhile, the midfield duo’s dynamism will help Rangnick to implement his high-press system. However, the Brazilian and the Scotsman has struggled to produce their best consistently and in order to become a key part of Manchester United’s midfield, they both have to display excellent performances week in week out.
