News of today: Manchester United have reportedly shortlisted West Ham United ace Declan Rice, Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips and RB Leipzig midfielder Amadou Haidara to address the midfield issue as per the report in ESPN

The Red Devils are keen on bringing in a defensive midfielder in the winter transfer window and have already been linked with several players. The German boss currently has Fred and Scott McTominay at his disposal for the midfield pivot role and strengthening the depth in that position has become an absolute necessity for the record Premier League champions.

According to the report, although Manchester United would like to sign a holding midfielder in January, it is not clear yet if the Red Devils will be able to break a deal for their number one target during this midseason. So, the Red Devils might have to wait until the end of this season and the new manager might decide who should be bought in midfield.

However, there might be few players who could leave the club in January as Rangnick has already said that the Red Devils have too many players at the moment and few of them might be sold. Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard are the most likely to be offloaded.

News of today: Will Manchester United sign anyone in January?

News of today: Manchester United have to strengthen their midfield position at the end of next month’s transfer window. Fred and McTominay can not play every game until the end of this season and Nemanja Matic might not be the perfect candidate to play in the German boss’ system.

Meanwhile, with Paul Pogba and Donny Van De Beek’s futures are still hanging in the air, signing a new midfielder has become an absolute necessity for Manchester United to manage the workload of McFred.

However, it will be difficult to sign Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips in this January transfer window as their respective clubs would not want to sell their star players at this stage of the season. Therefore, the Red Devils might go for Amadou Haidara who reportedly has a £32 million release clause in his current contract and could be a feasible purchase for the Old Trafford outfit.

So, it will be interesting to see what Manchester United decide to do about the midfield situation. Signing a new midfielder could help the Red Devils to perform in every competition. Otherwise, they might have to settle for the main objective which is to finish in the top four.
