Manchester United are reportedly closing in on a deal for Villarreal defender Pau Torres as per the report from journalist Dean Jones.
Having conceded the most number of goals in a single campaign in the club’s Premier League history, the Red Devils are keen on strengthening their backline this summer.
Ajax star Jurrien Timber is one of the names on Erik ten Hag’s wishlist, while the 25-year-old has also been mentioned as a potential target for Manchester United.
Meanwhile, reports in Spanish media are claiming that the Red Devils and Tottenham Hotspur are the two Premier League clubs who are eyeing a move for Pau Torres this summer. And despite Spurs being able to offer the Spaniard the Champions League football next season, the defender has set his eye on playing for the Old Trafford outfit.
On the other hand, speaking on GiveMeSport, Dean Jones has reported that Pau Torres to Manchester United is starting to gather pace and the deal is getting close. The journalist further stated that the Villarreal hierarchy believe that their star could join Erik ten Hag’s side this summer. Jone said:
“I think, from what I understand, a lot of people close to Pau Torres do see this deal as one that is still gathering pace. People close to the player say it is close and Villarreal think there’s a good chance it will happen.”
Pau Torres could be a very good addition to Manchester United. The defender is comfortable with possession, can play threading passes between the lines and also has an eye for long-range passing.
Meanwhile, the Spaniard is brilliant in the air which will be beneficial on both ends of the pitch for Manchester United. However, there are concerns about his recovery pace to play in a high defensive line.
The Red Devils’ new boss Erik ten Hag will implement a high-pressing system with the defensive line moving up in order to squeeze the opposition higher up the field. But, the 25-year-old might struggle to catch up with a quick forward if the opposition finds a way to play the ball behind the defensive line.
Pau Torres showcased that he can play in a high-defensive line when Villarreal almost pulled off a miracle in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final. However, the Yellow Submarines could not cope with Liverpool’s pressure in the second half.
So, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Pau Torres. If Manchester United were to sign the 25-year-old this summer then it will be interesting to see how the defender can cope with the physicality and the intensity of the Premier League.
