Ex-Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has urged his former club to sign the Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi.
The Red Devils are looking for a squad overhaul this summer under the new manager Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman has reportedly prioritised strengthening the midfield, defence and forward line as well.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are actively pursuing Barcelona ace Frenkie de Jong to bolster the engine room. And alongside the Netherlands international, Ruben Neves is also on the wishlist for the Red Devils.
Speaking on the Football Daily YouTube channel, quoted by Punch, Paul Scholes stated that Manchester United should consider signing Leicester star Wilfred Ndidi, given the Nigerian fits the criteria perfectly for what the Red Devils need at the moment.
With the midfielder only two years remaining in his current contract, he will cost significantly less this summer. Paul Scholes said:
“Leicester’s Wilfred Ndidi still very much fits the bill of what Manchester United are looking for, and with just two years remaining on his contract at Leicester, it’s likely to cost significantly less than the eye-watering sums associated with him in summer past.
“And while he missed the last two months of the season with a knee injury, he remains one of the best defensive midfielders in the game when fit, averaging an astounding 6.5 tackles and interceptions each match and ranking in the top seven per cent of midfielders for aerial duels, too.”
Manchester United was previously linked with a move for Wilfred Ndidi in the past. However, they had to backtrack from the deal due to Leicester’s high valuation. However, with only two years remaining in his current contract, the midfielder could be signed for a reasonable price.
The midfielder is strong, quick, brilliant in the air and excellent in defending. However, he lacks the technical prowess to play in Erik ten Hag’s system. The Dutchman likes his midfielders to be technically sound and can beat the opposition press.
Nevertheless, if Manchester United can pull off the signature of both Frenkie de Jong and Wilfred Ndidi then that would be a mouth-watering midfield partnership. The Dutchman will dictate the play with his passing efficiency, while the Nigerian will break up the opposition’s attacking threats.
So, it will be interesting to see who will end up at Manchester United at the end of this summer’s transfer window. Frenkie de Jong is the player who is heavily linked with a move to the Old Trafford stadium. But, there isn’t any strong link about a potential transfer of Wilfred Ndidi to Manchester United.
