Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick is reportedly eager to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji as per the report in German outlet Bild

The 26-year-old joined the Bundesliga giants back in 2018 from FC Basel for around £19 million. Since then he has made 150 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals.

According to the report, Manchester United’s interim manager Ralf Rangnick is eyeing a move for Manuel Akanji in order to solidify the defensive issues. The report also claimed that Bayern Munich star Niklas Sule was the main target for the German tactician, however, following the 26-year-old’s decision to join BVB, the United boss has shifted his attention to the Switzerland international.

Akanji’s current contract with Borussia Dortmund will expire in June 2023 and both parties have failed to agree on a new deal. Therefore, the centre-back will be on the market in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Our View:

Manuel Akanji will be a very good addition to the Manchester United squad. With Harry Maguire struggling to showcase his best this season and Eric Bailly failing to break into the first-team berth, strengthening the backline will be a shrewd decision by Ralf Rangnick.

However, the Red Devils are actively pursuing a new permanent manager at the moment and it is not clear yet who will succeed the German tactician. So, finalising a new signing by undermining the new manager might not be the right decision by the club’s hierarchy.

Meanwhile, following a disappointing defeat against Manchester City, the Old Trafford outfit have bounced back brilliantly by beating Tottenham Hotspur last weekend. This victory has kept their hopes alive in qualifying for the Champions League next season.

In the meantime, Manchester United will face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League round of 16 on Tuesday night in order to secure a place in the quarterfinal. Failing to progress to the next round will be a huge disappointment for the Mancunians.
