Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has denied reports claiming that the German has urged Harry Maguire to hand over the armband to Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 28-year-old has struggled to showcase his best this season, making 26 appearances in all competitions and scoring a solitary goal. The Red Devils have only managed to keep six clean sheets in 21 games in Premier League this term where the Englishman was involved.

According to the report in Metro, Rangnick held a discussion with Ronaldo and Maguire, and the German boss has asked the 28-year-old to give up the captaincy and hand it over to the Portuguese superstar. But, the defender is keen on keeping hold of his role as the club captain.

The report further stated that the 37-year-old has a strong influence inside the dressing room as the youngsters like Anthony Elanga, Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot and Jadon Sancho are all idolize Cristiano Ronaldo. However, the Red Devils boss has told in the press conference that there is no truth in this speculation.

Our View:

Harry Maguire does not have the personality to lead Manchester United and he doesn’t have the necessary qualities either to lead a team. So, it will be the right decision for the 28-year-old to hand over the armband to Cristiano Ronaldo and focus on his game.

It was a wrong decision from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the first place to make Maguire captain, given the defender had just signed for the Old Trafford outfit.

Giving Cristiano Ronaldo the responsibility will be a shrewd decision. The youngsters will benefit under the Portuguese superstar’s tutelage and extra responsibility will make him put in extra effort and set the standards for the rest of the team.

Meanwhile, Manchester United will travel to Elland Road to encounter Leeds United on Sunday afternoon before facing off Atletico Madrid in the Champions League next week. So, Rangnick will be hoping to earn all three points this weekend in order to keep the confidence high ahead of the tie against Diego Simeone’s side.
