Fabrizio Romano has provided a fresh update about Benfica star Darwin Nunez’s potential transfer to Manchester United.
The 22-year-old has caught the attention of big European clubs after displaying a promising performance this term, scoring 32 goals in 37 games in all competitions. The youngster has raised his worth even more after scoring goals in both legs against Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents Five, Fabrizio Romano stated that Manchester have been discussing Nunez internally but the Red Devils haven’t made any concrete approach to sign the youngster just yet.
The journalist further claimed that Arsenal and West Ham showed interest in signing the 22-year-old in January but the situation is different following the forward’s decision to change his agent. Romano said:
“It’s true that Manchester United are discussing internally about him. At the moment there are no negotiations because one week ago he changed his agent. So now everything has restarted about the talks, the conversations with the clubs. The clubs in January, as we said many times, Arsenal had him in their list. West Ham made a proposal on deadline day, 45 million and Benfica said no.
“But now with the new agent, who’s really close to Jorge Mendes, it’s completely different negotiation. It’s completely different about the relationship with the clubs, so now everything is going to restart. The price will be around 75 to 80 million euros. It’s still an open race and Jorge Mendes will know how it works, he has many relationships around the world. So he will discuss Darwin with many, many clubs.”
Manchester United need to strengthen their attacking department in the upcoming summer transfer window. With Edinson Cavani set to leave the club at the end of this season and Cristiano Ronaldo’s future also in doubt beyond this summer, signing a young forward will be a shrewd decision by the club’s hierarchy.
On top of that, Marcus Rashford is struggling to showcase his best in this campaign and has already expressed his desire to leave the club. Anthony Martial – who is currently on loan at Sevilla – might also want to leave the club.
So, signing Darwin Nunez will be a great acquisition for Manchester United. The youngster has already showcased his goal-scoring prowess and has also shown that the 22-year-old can perform at the highest level.
The Red Devils are likely to appoint Erik Ten Hag as their next permanent manager. The Dutchman likes to play with a high-pressing system and the youngster’s energy will be beneficial in pressing the opposition higher up the field.
