Manchester United are reportedly in contact with Barcelona in order to sign Dutch midfielder Frenkie De Jong as per the Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano

The Red Devils have appointed Erik ten Hag as their new manager and following the Dutchman’s appointment, reports started to come out that the 52-year-old boss wants to bring the Blaugrana ace to the Old Trafford stadium.

Last night transfer journalist Gerard Romero reported that Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United is getting closer and the deal is 95% done. And the midfielder will join the 20 times Premier League champions before the end of this month.

Romero further stated that the English giants will pay around €70/80 million. And the Spanish club are willing to cash in on their star man due to financial reasons.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has tweeted that the Red Devils are in contact with the Catalan giants about a potential transfer of the 25-year-old midfielder. However, a deal is not imminent, but Barcelona could offload the Dutchman in order to raise their transfer budget.

Our View:

Frenkie De Jong will be an apt acquisition to play in Erik Ten Hag’s system. They have already worked together at the Johan Cruyff Arena and the midfielder developed into a world-class prospect under the 52-year-old’s tutelage.

The Red Devils are eyeing a defensive midfielder in the summer and are linked with a move for Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips. However, the Dutchman will be a better choice for the Old Trafford outfit.

Meanwhile, Romano has reported that the 25-year-old wants to play in the Champions League. But, the Red Devils will not be able to offer him that for next season. So, it will be interesting to see how the club’s hierarchy will manage to persuade De Jong in order to sign for the record Premier League champions.

Following a disappointing defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion, qualifying for the Europa League is the only realistic option for Manchester United. However, considering their recent performances, they might struggle to achieve that goal as well.
