‘Saturday has to be a worry’ – former Manchester United midfielder fearful of defender’s recent display ahead of the derby

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes is worried about Saturday’s fixture against Manchester City after experiencing poor displays from Harry Maguire since returning from injury.

The Red Devils rescued a point against Atalanta in the Champions League after Cristiano Ronaldo bailed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side from a certain defeat, scoring twice in the stoppage time on either side of both halves.

Speaking on BT Sports after the game quoted by TEAMtalk, Scholes said that Manchester United were decent against Tottenham last weekend but against the Italian side, the Old Trafford outfit looked disjointed. Following Varane’s injury, Solskjaer’s side displayed a shaky performance and failed to take control in the middle of the park.

The former England International further stated that Harry Maguire hasn’t had a great start to the season and it could be a tough afternoon for the Red Devils against the city rivals as the Manchester United captain has looked uncertain without Varane in defence and the Frenchman might miss the weekend’s game due to injury. He said:

“They played alright Saturday [against Tottenham], but tonight it was messy. As soon as Varane went off it went all over the place, really shaky. Quality in the middle of the pitch wasn’t great, giving the ball away. Maguire just doesn’t look right and I don’t want to say it again, with no Varane, Saturday has to be a worry.

“If you’re Pep [Guardiola] you’d think you have a good chance to win. City think that anyway at any point it’ll be a difficult game but with no Varane it’s going to be more difficult. But saying that they have the quality to score. Even in the Liverpool game, they produced three clear chances. United need to defend and concentration is key.”

Maguire’s recent form is a big wary for Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer:

Harry Maguire hasn’t had a great start to the season after enjoying a stellar summer with his national squad that finished second in Euro 2020. The Manchester United captain looked uncertain on the ball and displayed shaky defending as well.

The Red Devils’ recent defensive record has shown the recent struggle of the Englishman as Solskjaer’s side have conceded 20 goals in 12 games in all competitions when the former Leicester man featured in defence.

With the Manchester derby on the horizon and Raphael Varane looking sidelined for the next few weeks due to hamstring injury, Solskjaer will have to face a real problem in finding the right balance in defence.

So, it will be interesting to see how the Norwegian manager set up his team against Manchester City on Saturday. Solskjaer initially started on Tuesday with back five but changed it to four during the game. Therefore, with Varane out injured, the United boss might have to deploy Lindelof, Maguire and Bailly as the three centre-backs if the Norwegian manager goes with this system.
