Following the 5-0 defeat against Liverpool, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s job is under real threat. Several names have been rumoured to become the next Manchester United manager and now according to ESPN the Leicester City boss, Brendan Rodgers is reportedly leading the race to become the Norwegian’s successor.

The Irish manager previously had served as the Liverpool and Celtic boss before taking charge at Leicester City back in 2019. The manager hasn’t had a great deal of success at the highest level of English football apart from the F.A Cup triumph and Community Shield victory with the King Power club.

So, there is a question mark about the 48-years-old’s prowess to make the Red Devils a title contender. The former Liverpool boss came closest with the Anfield club to become the Premier League champions during the 13/14 season, but the Reds fell just short to get over the line to eventual champions Manchester City.

Rodgers’ side have the tendency of falling short of their objectives as Leicester have come close to finishing the top four spot in the last two campaigns, but on both occasions, they missed out on securing the Champions League qualification by a bad run of results at the end.

Therefore, there is a huge risk in appointing the Leicester boss as the next Manchester United manager. It might also be tough for the 48-year-old to compete against elite coaches like Thomas Tuchel, Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola. With the Irish manager having Liverpool connections, it might trigger the fans to turn their back on Rodgers after one or two bad results.

The pros of Brendan Rodgers if he becomes the next Manchester United boss:

Brendan Rodgers’ playing style will certainly impress the Manchester United fans as he has always implemented a high pressing attacking brand of football, wherever he has managed.

The most impressive part about the 48-year-old’s managerial style is his flexibility in different systems. He generally likes to deploy four at the back with three lines of midfield and attacks. However, according to the player’s availability, he can implement different systems.

Rodgers started at Leicester with a back four and high pressing system, however, following a heavy defeat against Liverpool and a flurry of bad results towards the back end of the 19/20 season, he changed his approach and went with a more pragmatic style by using three at the back.

Manchester United have full of talents at their disposal, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hasn’t been able to take full advantage of the depth in his squad and Rodgers will certainly be a better appointment than the Norwegian as the Irishman has way more tactical nous than the Red Devils’ current boss.

The Leicester boss could make a stable squad that will play with better patterns on the ball and better structure without the possession. So, Although the Northern Irishman might not be an exciting appointment for the Old Trafford faithful, he will be a way better option than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The cons of Brendan Rodgers’ appointment:

The biggest doubt would be if he can challenge world-class managers like Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel for the Premier League title. The previous stats do not reflect a promising sign for the Irishman as he has encountered 15 times against the aforementioned three managers in all competitions and came away victorious only four times and ended up on the losing side on nine occasions.

So, bringing in Rodgers with the aim to win titles might not be a wise decision from the Red Devils hierarchy. In addition to that, despite having a decent squad at Leicester, the Foxes have started the season on a disappointing note as they are currently sitting ninth in the league table with 14 points in nine games.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Will he be able to turn his fortune around or a new manager will get appointed in the upcoming few weeks? Only the next couple of results will make it clear for the Old Trafford faithful.
